I just found out that I am pregnant, when should I schedule my first doctor's appointment and what should I expect?

You should call the office when you have a positive home pregnancy test.  Your first appointment will be about two weeks after your missed period.  At this visit, your doctor will perform an assessment, a pap smear if it is time, and an ultrasound to help determine when your baby is due.

How often should I expect to see the physician during my pregnancy?

Every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks. and then weekly until delivery.

What should I expect at my routine OB appointments?

Weight, blood pressure, urine check, measuring of your abdomen, and listening to your baby's heart beat.

Will I have to get undressed for every appointment?

You will undress from the waist down until the baby's heartbeat can be heard (about 10-13 weeks), if you have a problem, and at 35-36 weeks when our doctors begin to check for cervical dilation.

What is the most important thing you can do for the health of yourself and your unborn baby?

Eat a well balanced diet with proper nutrition.

My prenatal vitamins are making me sick, what should I do?

Try taking them with a meal or at bedtime.  If this does not work, try taking 2 Flintstone chewable vitamins daily until the nausea subsides.

When will I have an ultrasound?

1st appointment - helps with determining the most accurate due date
20 weeks - anatomy ultrasound, this is when can find out the sex of the baby if you wish
36 weeks - estimated weight, fluid level

Can I get a flu shot?

YES! It is recommended for pregnant women and household family members.

Are there foods that I should avoid while I am pregnant?

Foods that contain mercury, certain types of fish (swordfish); avoid deli meats and unpasteurized cheeses; raw foods; alcohol and artificial sweeteners.

How much weight should I gain?

Prior to pregnancy, if you are a normal weight: 25 - 35 pounds; overweight: 15 - 25 pounds; underweight: 35 40 pounds.  Your weight will be monitored and you may need to gain more or less as recommended by our doctors.

I am pregnant.  Can I still exercise?

It is safe to exercise in moderation.

I am pregnant.  Is it okay to travel?

If your pregnancy has been completely normal thus far, you should be fine to travel until 34 weeks.  This question should be answered on a individual basis so please ask your doctor at your appointment or feel free to call the office.
